South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo is bringing the issue of anti-social behaviour in the Holylands area to the Assembly on 2 March 2010. The debate comes just weeks ahead of St Patrick's Day, the same day which last year saw serious disorder and disruption in the area.

Anna Lo MLA said: "This is an issue of massive concern for people in the area and I am pleased to bring this to the floor of the Assembly. Anti-social behaviour is something that affects the lives of everyone in the area, both longer-term residents and students. A lot has been done by a range of agencies, but I want to ensure that there is no complacency in the future.

People will not and should not accept scenes such as those witnessed last St Patrick's Day in the Holylands. That was tantamount to torture for people living in the area. The thoughtless actions of a few must not be allowed to spoil a great day for everyone else.

This is about protecting students as well as local residents. The parents of young people at university need to be confident that measures are in place to allow their sons and daughters to get on with their studies and their lives free from the hassle caused by a small minority of students."
