Lo shocked at racial abuse and commends HMRC on its action against it
18/08/10
South Belfast Alliance MLA Anna Lo has commended Revenue and Customs for sacking seven staff for racially-motivated gross misconduct but expressed shock that this has happened in the first place.
Anna Lo MLA said: “I want to commend Revenue and Customs' swift action in dealing with this racially motivated gross misconduct. It is however deeply shocking that such behaviour has happened in the first place.
I want to stress the importance of corporate racial equality policy and procedures to deal with racial discrimination and the importance of staff training to understand the value of diversity and acceptable behaviour. We still have some way to go in tackling racism in the workplace and people must be vigilant against it.
Diversity is something that should be celebrated and we need to tackle all forms of prejudice, not just in the workplace, but in all aspects of everyday life.”
